Collection of the week: Peter Higginbotham

Social historian Peter Higginbotham has long been collecting images relating to workhouses, borne out of an initial quest to further investigate his own family history. The bleak, forbidding history of the workhouse, embodied in the novels of Charles Dickens, is explored in remarkable detail through Peter's unique collection.

The images are taken from vintage photographs, prints and ephemera related to workhouse life and modern photographs (many taken by Peter himself) of surviving workhouse buildings, providing a comprehensive overview of this significant, if challenging aspect of social history. The collection has now been expanded to include imagery relating to Children's Homes throughout the UK.

These images are available exclusively from Mary Evans Picture Library and are an unrivalled source on this subject. You can also find out more about Peter and his dedication to making this content available at www.workhouses.org.uk and www.childrenshomes.org.uk
